Your roof file

This page builds a plain-text record you can keep for your own use: what you saw at ground level, what documents you already hold, questions you want to ask, and notes on the scope of up to three proposals. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The file is assembled inside your browser and downloaded only when you choose.

What this is not. This is a documentation aid for homeowners, not contractor, inspection, engineering or claims-adjusting guidance. Do not climb onto the roof, open electrical systems or remove building components to complete it. Record only what you can see safely from the ground. Nothing here interprets insurance or legal coverage, and nothing here is medical, legal or insurance advice.

Record details

The date you made these observations. Defaults to today; you may change it.

Describe what you can see from the ground: missing or lifted shingles, debris, staining on ceilings indoors, gutters, nearby trees. Do not give a full street address if you would rather not; a general description is enough. Up to 4000 characters.

Write the questions you want answered in your roofing conversation. Up to 4000 characters.

Note what each proposal says about scope — for example what will be removed, what will be replaced, and what is excluded. Record only what the document states; do not fill gaps yourself. Up to 4000 characters.

Where to check things officially

  • Florida roofing contractor licences can be looked up through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's Verify a Licensee service, which shows licence type, licence number, status, licensure date and expiration.
  • FEMA advises homeowners to check with the local building official before beginning any repairs or rebuilding, because building codes, permits, inspection requirements and zoning ordinances may be involved.
